Early voting for primary elections in Texas kicks off today and will run through February 25.The Republican primary for governor is perhaps the most anticipated race, with incumbent Governor Greg Abbott facing his most serious and well-funded challenges in recent years. Abbott is in a strong position, though, having nabbed the coveted endorsement of former president Donald Trump and enjoying a strong fundraising lead.
Several high-profile Republicans are running to unseat the state’s top lawyers as well. Attorney General Ken Paxton is facing outgoing Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman, and U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX-01) in the primary.
Bush’s run for attorney general leaves his desk at the head of the General Land Office open, drawing a crowded field of candidates. Eight Republicans and four Democrats are running for the office of land commissioner, the only open statewide seat in Texas in 2022.
